We began fostering with GMDAP in the summer of 2020, right after one of our previous dogs passed away. We had several sets of puppies that we thoroughly enjoyed.
One afternoon, we were at GMDAP HQ to pick up and foster a pair of kittens, and these 2 adorable puppies were still in need of a foster home. So we said, what the heck, we have room, and brought them home for what we thought would be a short foster. They had been abandoned on the side of a busy road in KY. The little female pup was terrified but the male quickly settled in and loved to lay right at our feet. We realized the female needed more than a week of foster time to become properly socialized so decided to hold on to them both a little longer, and during that time recognized that the male pup fit in with our family perfectly.
We made the decision to formally adopt him and that has just been the best decision of our lives. We continued to foster, both puppies, kittens, and young adult dogs, and Snickers has been the absolute best foster brother. He absolutely loves other dogs as well as the kittens and is such a help in getting scared puppies to learn how to be a dog and teaching them how to play and walk on a leash. He gently corrects them when they start playing a little too rough. This dog lives his best life when we have foster puppies in the house.
We did a DNA test on him which was a lot of fun. Snickers is a “supermutt” with over 14 breeds found including treewalking coon hound, German Shepherd and chow.
We could not ask for a better dog and we just love Snickers, who is now 2 years old, with our whole hearts. We continue to foster puppies and kittens as we have found that to be a very very rewarding experience for ourselves and our children.
